About Settle Freemasons
Making good men better
Castleberg Lodge was founded in 1885 by a group of local Freemasons who were members of a Lodge in Skipton. After a few homes it settled in 1947 into its current home in the Masonic Hall, Chapel Square, Settle, a former Sunday School building.
It is known as a “lunar” lodge as it meets on the Thursday on or before the full moon, rather than, say, on the second Thursday of the month. This harks back to those old times in a rural area without street lights when members found their way home after meetings by the light of the moon!
As well as conducting the necessary business of the lodge, funds are raised for charities and good causes national and local, and many groups and individuals in and around Settle have benefitted over the years.
After each meeting a meal and a few drinks are enjoyed by all, including visitors from other lodges in the area, and it is here that long lasting friendships are forged.
With members from every age group and from a diverse range of occupations and backgrounds, conversation and company is always varied and a good time is had by all.
